Filling Types
There are four different choices that you have when it comes to filling a cavity.
- Composite Fillings - Composite fillings are today's modern filling choice. They are made to match your tooth's natural color to make them virtually invisible to notice and are placed onto the tooth by bonding the filling material to the tooth so they do not have the unlikely chance of falling off. Many patients choose to replace their old silver and gold fillings with composite fillings.
- Silver Fillings - Silver (amalgam) fillings are the most common type of filling. Silver fillings are made from a mercury based amalgam metal that fills the cavity and conforms to the crown of the tooth. They're cheap, yet they get the job done. Silver fillings are beginning to fade out because of the more attractive, conservative and practical composite filling.
- Gold Fillings - Gold fillings are an older form of a filling restoration. They are soft so they form nicely to the tooth's crown. Although they may be more costly than conventional silver fillings, they are more attractive than the amalgam fillings.
- Porcelain - provide state of the art strength, beauty and durability
